What You Need to Know to Start Living Authentically

What You Need to Know to Start Living Authentically

Have you ever worked tirelessly for something, only to realize that once you had it, it no longer mattered?

This reminds me of a line from a Garth Brooks song where he says, “Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.”

These lyrics resonate so well with me, as over the years, many of my prayers seem to have gone unanswered.

But what I ended up receiving has been so much better than what I was asking for!

Have you ever noticed a recurring theme in your life where you deeply desire something but never seem to receive it?

Does your list of wants seem endless, leaving you with a constant sense of lack?

And are you wondering why this cycle keeps repeating?

If you’re ready to change what could be a lifelong pattern, the key lies in ensuring you’re living authentically and in alignment with your higher self.

Because when you’re disconnected from this kind of inner alignment, your life can feel like an unpredictable series of mishaps, highs, and lows.

But there is a way to go beyond your surface-level desires, uncover what your soul truly longs for, and start living authentically.

So, if you want to get to the bottom of this seemingly never-ending cycle, and start living in alignment with your true self, then keep reading to learn more.

What You Can Do to Start Living Authentically

What You Can Do to Start Living Authentically

If you want to move beyond fleeting desires and step into true fulfillment, you must establish inner alignment by finding your authentic self.

Honing in on this kind of inner alignment is important because it brings clarity, fulfillment, and flow to your life.

And when you’re aligned, everything you do feels more meaningful and success comes with greater ease because you’re moving with your true purpose rather than against it.

But this will require you to figure out what exactly it is you want in this life, which involves:

  • Getting clear on what your soul truly desires vs. what your ego or conditioning tells you to want
  • Shifting from external validation to internal wisdom and knowing that true fulfillment comes from within
  • Trusting that the universe is always guiding you toward what is best for you, even when things don’t go as planned

Are you ready to explore the deepest desires of your soul and align with the path meant for you?

Why Is Inner Alignment so Important?

Far too often, we choose to align ourselves with what our ego and our programming tells us we need or want.

But that’s often quite far removed from what the soul actually wants and what it’s going to take to start living authentically.

With that in mind, let’s look at why this kind of inner alignment is so important.

Eliminates Inner Conflict

When you’re misaligned, life feels like an uphill battle, and you may experience:

  • Doubt and second-guessing
  • Frustration with lack of progress
  • Feeling like you’re being pulled in too many directions

But when you’re living in alignment with your true self, this resistance is replaced with confidence and clarity.

Creates Deep Fulfillment

Chasing desires that aren’t truly yours can lead to temporary satisfaction, but it also tends to lead to long-term emptiness.

But when you’re living authentically, success feels deeply rewarding, rather than just externally impressive.

Activates Flow and Synchronicity

When you’re on the right path, things just seem to start falling into place, and opportunities, connections, and ideas come more effortlessly.

And no matter what you need to live authentically, the universe will support what is truly yours.

Saves You Time and Energy

Pursuing the wrong goals can waste years of your life, and unfortunately, you may not realize you’re moving in the wrong direction until it’s much too late.

But making sure you’re living authentically helps you prioritize what truly matters, so you won’t spend your life climbing the wrong mountain.

Amplifies Your Impact

When you’re doing what you’re meant to do, your work can touch many lives in a way that feels more effortless and natural.

This lets you work from a place of authenticity and purpose, which can allow you to make a much greater difference in the world.

Gives You Inner Peace

When you’re living authentically, you’re going to have a much greater sense of calm, as you’ll be at peace with how you’re living, and not in conflict with yourself.

And that means no more feeling lost or like you’re missing something. Instead, you’ll feel:

  • Clear in your decisions
  • Confident in your direction
  • At peace with where you are and where you’re going

How to Discover Your Soul’s Purpose

How to Discover Your Soul’s Purpose

At this point, you may be wondering how to sift through all your wants and desires so you can truly understand your purpose in this life and start living authentically.

In any case, achieving this kind of internal alignment requires peeling back the layers of your wants and desires to uncover what is truly in resonance with your soul’s purpose.

With that in mind, here’s some advice to help you navigate this process:

Identify Core Desires vs. Surface Wants

Your core desires are things that feel timeless, fulfilling, and create a deep sense of peace and excitement.

Surface wants, on the other hand, are often influenced by society, family, trends, or fleeting emotions. They also change over time and can be very distracting.

Having said that, here’s an exercise to help you figure this out:

Start by writing down all your wants and desires. Then, go through each one and ask:

  • Is this truly mine, or is it shaped by external influences?
  • Does this align with my values and who I want to become?
  • If I achieved this, would it feel deeply fulfilling in the long run?

Determine What Expands vs. Constricts You

During this stage of the process, your body and emotions will guide you.

That being said, when you think about a particular desire, if it brings a sense of expansion, excitement, or peace, then chances are, it’s aligned with your soul’s purpose.

But if it creates stress, fear, or pressure to prove something, then it might be rooted in ego or external validation.

Notice the Recurring Themes

If you look at your past experiences, passions, and the moments when you felt most alive, these patterns will help to reveal what you’ll need to do to start living authentically.

With that in mind, if you want to recall these kinds of recurring themes, you should try journaling about the times when you felt the most:

  • Joyful
  • In-flow
  • Inspired
  • Connected to something greater

And as you’re reviewing what you’ve written, keep in mind that your soul’s purpose often exists where these moments overlap.

Trust Your Deepest Desires, Not Your Loudest Ones

Some desires seem to scream for your attention, while others are more like a whisper, but they never go away.

At any rate, the desires that quietly but consistently call you are the ones that tend to be most aligned with your true self.

Surrender and Let Go of What’s Not Yours

Once you begin to recognize your misaligned desires, you should practice releasing them, as this opens up space for your soul’s purpose to be revealed.

Take Small Authentic Actions

Although you may be tempted to do so, once you’ve discovered your soul’s purpose, you shouldn’t wait around for absolute clarity before moving forward.

The truth is clarity often comes through action, and if you take small steps toward the things that feel right, then the path will refine itself.

Listen to Your Intuition

Practicing things like meditation, journaling, or simply sitting in silence can help you tune into your inner guidance system, making it easier to understand who you truly are and what your purpose is.

Why Is it so Much Easier to Remain as You Are Instead of Living Authentically?

For most people, it’s considerably easier to remain as you are, rather than trying to figure out how to live authentically, and that’s because this kind of inner alignment requires growth, surrender, and courage.

But staying the same offers a sense of familiarity and comfort, which can seem much easier.

Here are some of the reasons why this seems so much simpler:

The Comfort of the Known vs. The Uncertainty of Change

Your current self is built on habits, beliefs, and identities that feel safe, even if they aren’t fulfilling.

But if you want to live authentically, and be aligned with your soul’s purpose, this will require you to step into the unknown, which can trigger fear and resistance.

For instance, you might feel compelled to write full-time, but the fear of financial instability or failure keeps you clinging to the familiar.

The Ego Resists Change

The ego thrives on predictability and control, while the soul calls for trust and surrender.

Moreover, the ego fears losing its identity, so it resists transformation, even if that transformation is likely to lead to deeper happiness.

For example, if you’ve always seen yourself as a certain type of person (e.g. practical or logical), choosing to embrace a more intuitive, creative path might feel unsettling.

Society Rewards Conformity, Not Soul Alignment

Many people live in survival mode, chasing external success rather than deep fulfillment.

What’s more, the world often validates material achievement over spiritual alignment, which means a lot of people will choose to stay misaligned in order to fit in.

For instance, if your true calling is something unconventional (like channeled writing), societal expectations might make it tempting to stay on a more “normal” path.

Living Authentically Requires Letting Go

Letting go of old patterns, beliefs, and even relationships that no longer serve you can be painful, but the ego relentlessly clings to what’s familiar, even if it’s limiting.

As such, you may need to leave behind old identities or relationships that don’t support your growth, which can feel lonely at first.

Spiritual Alignment Asks for Trust in the Unknown

The soul speaks in intuition, subtle nudges, and deep knowing – not always in logical, linear steps.

As a result, many people tend to resist this kind of alignment because they want certainty first, but true spiritual alignment asks you to trust first.

For example, your soul may call you toward a creative project, but there’s no immediate guarantee of success – just an inner knowing that it’s the right thing to do.

Staying the Same vs. Living Authentically

Staying the same may feel easier in the short-term, but the truth is, it often leads to feeling stuck or unfulfilled, sensing that something is missing, or repeating the same patterns over and over again without experiencing any real joy.

But if you do start living authentically, while it may be challenging at first, ultimately, it leads to a deep sense of purpose, a feeling of flow and ease, and much greater inner peace and fulfillment.

At this point, the real question is: What’s harder in the long run – temporary growing pains or the lifelong pain of regret?

What part of alignment feels hardest for you right now?

I don’t know about you, but from my perspective, lifelong regret seems infinitely harder.

Temporary growing pains, on the other hand, may feel intense, but after a certain amount of time, they will pass.

At the end of the day, this is the fire that forges you into the person you’re meant to be.

Every challenge, every leap of faith, every fear faced helps you to ensure you’re living authentically.

And over time, the discomfort will fade, replaced by confidence, clarity, and fulfillment.

But regret lingers. It whispers, “What if?”

It haunts you with missed chances and unexplored paths.

It settles in as a quiet dissatisfaction that never fully leaves.

Regret isn’t just about what you didn’t do – it’s about the life you chose not to live.

So, the real question here isn’t whether living authentically is difficult, it’s whether you’re willing to trade temporary struggle for a lifetime of fulfillment.

Will you choose the courage to align, or the comfort of regret?

Your soul already knows the answer. The only thing left is for you to decide.
